What is Dialysis?

Dialysis is an artificial medical process for removing excess water, solutes, and toxins from the blood in people whose kidneys can no longer perform these functions naturally. This is referred to as renal replacement therapy

Reasons for dialysis

- Abnormal brain function (uremic encephalopathy)

- Inflammation of the sac around the heart (pericarditis)

- A high level of acid in the blood (acidosis) that does not decrease despite other treatments

- Heart failure

- Total body fluid overload

- Fluid overload in the lungs (pulmonary edema) that does not respond to other treatments

- A very high level of potassium in the blood (severe hyperkalemia), sometimes hypercalcemia 

- Greatly reduced kidney function

- Intoxication: methanol, ethylene glycol, lithium, salicylate.

Sometimes we have to put dialysis as no choice for other treatments to survey patient's mental health.
